Studying Abroad Without IELTS in 2026: What Actually Works
MOI letters, PTE, Duolingo and internal assessments are all accepted somewhere — but not everywhere, and not for every visa. A destination-by-destination breakdown.
Two separate hurdles
There are always two English requirements, and students routinely confuse them: the university’s admission requirement, and the visa authority’s requirement. A university may waive a test that the visa office still expects, particularly for applicants from countries subject to enhanced assessment.
United Kingdom
Many UK universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test or their own internal assessment for admission. For visa purposes, students at degree level can generally rely on the university’s own assessment, which is why UK routes without IELTS are the most workable of the four destinations.
Australia
Providers may waive a test for some applicants, but the Department of Home Affairs applies its own English requirements to the subclass 500. In practice, a recognised test score makes an Australian application substantially stronger, and we usually recommend one even where the provider does not insist.
Canada and New Zealand
Canada accepts IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and CELPIP for most programs, with some institutions accepting Duolingo. New Zealand providers accept a range of tests, and NZQA-approved internal assessments are available at some institutions. Direct-entry pathways with no test at all are rare for Bangladeshi applicants.
Our honest recommendation
If you can sit a test, sit one. A 6.5 IELTS or equivalent widens your university list, improves your scholarship chances and strengthens your visa file. If a test is genuinely not possible right now, we will find the universities that will proceed without it — but you should know what you are trading away.
