The UK Graduate Route Drops to 18 Months in January 2027 — Why Your Intake Date Suddenly Matters

The UK Graduate Route Drops to 18 Months in January 2027 — Why Your Intake Date Suddenly Matters

The change in one line

Graduate Route applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027 will grant 18 months to bachelor’s and master’s graduates instead of the current 2 years. PhD graduates are unaffected and keep 3 years.

Why six months is worth more than it sounds

The Graduate Route is unsponsored — you can work for any employer in any role. Most international graduates use the first six to nine months simply finding a job, then need a further period on the payroll before an employer will commit to sponsoring a Skilled Worker visa. Removing six months from the end of that window removes the part where sponsorship conversations actually happen.

Who is affected and who is not

You must be physically in the UK when you apply for the Graduate Route, and you must have completed your course. If you finish in 2026 and apply before 31 December 2026, you lock in the full two years. If your completion date pushes into 2027, you receive 18 months.

The planning question we ask every UK applicant

Which intake gets you to a completion date before the deadline? For many one-year master’s programs, a September 2026 start finishes in late 2027 — after the cut-off. That is not a reason to avoid the UK, but it is a reason to understand what you are buying before you pay a deposit.

Costs to budget for

The Graduate Route application fee is currently £937, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year, paid upfront for the whole period. Budget for this at the start of your studies rather than discovering it in your final semester.
