The Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: Why Australian Student Visas Get Refused
GS is now the single most common reason a subclass 500 application fails. A practical guide to what the Department actually wants to read — and the template answers that get you refused.
What GS replaced and why it matters
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test. Instead of proving you intend to leave, you now have to explain your circumstances, your reasons for choosing this course with this provider in this country, and the benefit the qualification gives you afterwards. It is answered through targeted questions rather than one long essay.
The four questions that decide your case
Your current circumstances including ties to family, community and employment; why this course and this provider; what the course gives you once you finish; and any other relevant information. Every one of these should be specific enough that it could not have been written about anybody else.
Why template answers fail
Case officers read thousands of these. Phrases like "Australia has a world-class education system" and "I want to contribute to my country’s development" carry no information. If your statement could be copied into another student’s application by changing the name, it is not a GS statement — it is filler.
The career progression test
The strongest GS statements draw a straight line: this is my academic background, this is the gap in my skills, this specific course closes it, and here is the role and salary band it leads to in my home country or region. Name employers. Quote salary data. Attach the job advertisements you are aiming at.
Explaining the difficult parts
Study gaps, previous refusals, a change of field and modest academic results all need to be raised by you rather than discovered by the case officer. Explain the gap with evidence of employment or family responsibility. Address a previous refusal by answering the exact reason given in the refusal letter.
Financial capacity is part of the story
You must evidence A$29,710 for living costs plus tuition and travel. But the officer is also assessing whether the money is genuinely available to you. Recent large deposits without explanation, a sponsor whose income does not match the balance, or funds that appear and vanish will all raise the same question.
